HO Model Railroad Kits

Model railroading can be an expensive hobby. One way to keep the cost down is to build as many of the pieces as you can from kits instead of buying them preassembled. Of course, keeping the cost low is not the only reason to build your model railroad from kits or from scratch. There is a sense of accomplishment and pride that comes from doing it yourself and really, that is a big part of what model railroading is all about.

As an example on the expense issue; to purchase a preassembled hand built HO scale locomotive would cost you several hundred dollars. In fact, some of the more elaborate locomotives can run into the thousands of dollars. But if you buy the kit to make a locomotive yourself, you can get one for fewer than one hundred dollars.

But price aside, most model railroaders would probably rather build their train and layout from scratch. In that case, HO scale kits come in pretty handy. There are several different types of HO scale kits you can buy to build your train layout. You can buy kits from which you make your train and locomotive as well as your track. Beginner kits contain the basic pieces you need to get started. You can get a very basic kit which may only receive a small straight section of track instead of the entire loop, or a more complex complete set that has an oval track as well as some scenery pieces and structures.

HO scale is the most popular scale in the United States right now so many manufacturers support the scale with a wide variety of products and HO scale kits. One such all encompassing kit is the Woodland Scenics kit which contains a River Pass layout kit, track pack, scenery kit and building set.

You can also buy individual scenery kits and structure kits which contain everything you need including decals to make your layout as realistic as possible. There are kits for about every purpose such as woodland scenes, city scenes, even a carnival scene.

HO scale kits can be purchased from model train catalogs, at local hobby shops or over the internet. The internet is actually a very good place to look for model railroad kits as you might imagine. You will have access to products from a wide variety of manufacturers and online stores so you can compare products and prices. Many of the online stores specialize in or have sections devoted just to HO scale products since it is such a popular choice among model railroaders.
