Model Train Set Supply Essentials

So you have decided to explore the hobby of model trains. It is a very popular and rewarding hobby, where a person can really explore their creative side. However, you cannot build a model train set without first compiling the necessary materials and items.

Assuming you have already decided where you plan to build this model, you need to choose a gauge size that you would like to work with. This is going to be largely dependant on how much space you will have to work with. Many people enjoy HO gauge train sets because they are right in the middle when it comes to size, and there are countless options for decoration and the trains themselves.

The first thing you want to do is decide what type of platform you will be using to build on. There are pre-made platforms that come in different materials and are made from molds, so they already have the impressions for hillsides, tunnels, and other textural elements. What most hobbyists choose to do, on the other hand, is make their own platforms out of an inexpensive length of board, generally chipboard or plywood. This way, the size of the board can be cut to the desired shape and size and will be lightweight enough to move around if necessary.

Anyway, you now have a generic platform, and it is time to make it come alive as your new train set landscape. This is where you will get your creative juices flowing, because you get to choose whether to build a bustling railroad town, or a lush countryside. If you choose a city, you can either purchase ready made buildings and houses to attach to the platform, or you can build your own. There are even buildings that you can purchase that have lighting so that they look realistic!

If you decide to go with a wilderness landscape, you get to make your own hills and mountains, tunnels for your train to go through, streams, rivers, lakes, and anything else you would like to add. This can be achieved with any number of household materials, but you will likely need glue, plaster, and rubber molding solution. You can also purchase or make your own trees. The rubber solution and plaster are used to make your own molds from rocks, branches, and other items that you want to add to your model.

Again, you will want to consider the gauge of train you want to use, because you need to buy the track. The track size is critical because if you have the wrong size track, it may not work with your trains. You will want to measure out how much space you have on your platform for track, and purchase accordingly.

Lastly, you will need the train parts themselves. Engines, boxcars, and cabooses are all available, and this is probably the most fun part of the entire process, because this is where you personalize the platform with either a working or decorational train.
